Melasma

Melasma is a dark pigmentation on the face, which is typically seen on the cheek region.

Melasma can be acquired such as that seen during pregnancy (we call this Chloasma), or develop spontaneously. It is one of the most difficult conditions to treat and is often misdiagnosed.

Please the photo above is that of a genuine patient of Dr Wong, the photographs are not altered or manipulated in any way. It is important to understand that the photos represent one persons experience and there is no guarantee that any other patient will experience similar results.

Misdiagnosing or not recognising Melasma can mean that you can make the condition worst. It is not infrequent that patients come to Sapphire after having had treatment elsewhere, for pigmented lesions that have become darker after light-based treatment. This is likely to be due to Melasma which has not been diagnosed.

Sometimes small symmetrical dark spots on the cheek are thought to be superficial pigmented lesions, but in actual fact they are deep in the dermis such as Hori's macules.

The most important point is that a correct diagnosis is always required before any treatment is initiated, and that is why it is important to come to see us at Sapphire.

For the removal of hormonal pigmentation or Melasma in selected patients, we offer an array of effective treatments depending on the degree of the pigmentation. For some smaller pigmented areas, they may be removed with Intense Pulse Light or Fractional Laser.

For more wide spread superficial Melasma then a combination of High Dose Vitamin C infusions, Microdermabrasion with the SilkPeel, and medical peeling mask with ongoing treatment using prescription only medication over several months can give some patients good results.
